2009 Home Tours
Get to NOMI Home Buyer Tours July 16 (6:30), Aug. 20 (6:30), and Sunday, Sept. 13 (11 a.m.)
Anyone thinking of buying a home (now or in the future) can meet enthusiastic NOMI neighbors at a low-key event that starts out with socializing and continues through viewing a variety of for-sale homes.
Realtors host the homes and accompany each Tour, available for information – no pressure. Here’s what’s on tap for the rest of the summer:
Thursday, July 16, 6:30 p.m. Tour spotlights Jordan and Hawthorne neighborhoods, starting at a newly-built home in the “cluster” with locally-concocted munchies and refreshment. These areas have had extensive attention to new home-building in place of previously worn-out housing. Many lovely craftsman and early 1900s homes also remain, and residents are passionate about building their neighborhoods. Jordan and Hawthorne border on West Broadway, a main focus of the FLOW Art Crawl Saturday July 25.
Thursday, August 20, 6:30 p.m. Tour spotlights Shingle Creek neighborhood and its practical and solid post-war housing stock. Starts at Victory 44 at 44th & Penn with free appetizers.
Sunday, September 13, 11 a.m. Tour takes an in-depth look at buying foreclosures: tips for making an effective offer, sizing up a home for renovations and finance-ability. Homes in the McKinley and/or Folwell neighborhoods will serve as examples. Starts at Papa’s, 42nd and Thomas Avenues N.
The Minneapolis Advantage returns!!
Minneapolis has announced the return of the Minneapolis Advantage program!
The Minneapolis Advantage program provides $10,000 grants to homebuyers for down payment and closing cost assistance for the purchase of foreclosed properties. The property must be a foreclosed property, purchased for owner-occupancy, and owned for a minimum of five years.
Neighborhoods in NOMI that are eligible for the Minneapolis advantage include: Harrison, Hawthorne, Near North, Willard-Hay,Cleveland, Folwell, Jordan, Lind-Bohanon, McKinley and Webber-Camden.
"The key to rebuilding neighborhoods overwhelmed by foreclosures is to get solid, responsible homeowners into these neighborhoods," said Mayor R.T.Rybak. "The success of the Minneapolis Advantage program has shown us that there are great homes to be had and that people are ready to move into these neighborhoods. Our job is to help make that happen and this funding just made our job a whole lot easier."
The city of Minneapolis will announce further details of the application process for these grants and expects to launch the program in March 2009.
